NJ 537593. A stone causeway (4.5 m wide and high) crossed the 10.15m wide rock-cut ditch, with a gap for a drawbridge, and incorporated two natural stone piers of an earlier timber bridge. The dimensions do not agree with those of the chamberlain's account of 1303/4. Evidence for the use of chisels and wedges in quarrying the ditch was found, with traces of iron smithing. The Civil War occupation produced a good collection of pottery, clay pipes (separately published), and musket balls. D F R
