Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at land west of Elm Farm, South Ferriby in support of a planning application for the construction of a new pumping station. Stage 1 consisted of a borehole transect undertaken west-east across the northern part of the site for a distance of 150m; Stage 2 involved the excavation of a single 2m x 20m trench. The boreholes were sunk to a depth of 7-8m BGL. To the west, three boreholes were positioned over an earthwork channel thought to represent the relict course of the River Ancholme. A broadly homogenous sequence of strata was encountered across the site, with the upper levels of a peat-like deposit encountered between 4.2m and 3.2m below OD. Palaeoenvironmental assessment from the layer identified plant detritus and insect remains suggestive of the formation of a reed marsh. The peaty deposit was overlain by estuarine clays with low organic content. The area of the relict channel yielded a deposit with terrestrial and aquatic insects as well as plants from fresh to brackish-water habitats and evidence for meadow grazing nearby. The evaluation trench encountered a sequence of deposits reflecting the upper sequence of estuarine clay defined within the borehole transect. No material suitable for dating was identified.
