Abstract:
University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) carried out an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land to the south of Bosworth Road, Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire (SK 4377 0922). The work was undertaken as part of an archaeological impact assessment in advance of a proposed development. The evaluation revealed archaeological settlement evidence dating to the Iron Age (700 BC - 43 AD), and the Anglo-Saxon period (AD 400-1066). Archaeological evidence was seen in 6 of 30 trenches, consisting of an Iron Age ditched enclosure settlement with evidence for a building, a cremation, pits, and further field boundaries. The Anglo-Saxon evidence consisted of a single pit containing loom weights. The site archive will be held by Leicestershire County Council Heritage Services Section, accession no. XA.69.2011.
