Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May and June 2014 on land at Newark Farm, Hempsted, Gloucester. Fourteen trenches were excavated. In addition, two trenches previously excavated within a proposed contractors' compound area were also examined and recorded. The earliest dateable features encountered were a series of ditches containing 2nd to 4th-century AD pottery. One ditch that had been recut contained an intact 3rd to 4th-century pottery vessel which appeared to have deliberately deposited at its base. A medieval boundary ditch containing 10th to 14th-century AD pottery, and east/west-aligned plough furrows associated with extant remains of ridge and furrow cultivation were also identified. One trench was excavated across an extant earthwork, thought to be a medieval pillow mound, within the southern part of the site. Animal burrowing noted within the underlying natural substrate and the lowermost levels of the mound contained two fragments of post-medieval tile. |
