Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of the construction of a house and garage on the site located on the south side of Kirkgate. Previous finds in the area suggested a potential for evidence of Saxon and/or medieval settlement. A trench was excavated at right angles to Kirkgate - offset at the end nearest to Kirkgate to avoid an area of hard-standing. The trench revealed a ditch or drain (possibly an elongated pit) running parallel with Kirkgate. Modern pottery was recovered from the secondary fill of the feature. A probable roddon occupied much of the area investigated, extending to the northern boundary of the site closest to Kirkgate. It is possible that Kirkgate (probably a medieval drove road) runs along the top of this roddon. |
