Abstract:
This report describes the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on land at former Wouldhave House, Market Place, South Shields (NGR NZ 3602 6709) 12th November 2014. The archaeological work was commissioned by Prospect Archaeology Ltd on behalf of Muse Developments in response to a planning condition attached to the construction of a new Central Library and Digital Media Centre. The aim of the work was to characterise the archaeological potential of the proposed development area. The principal result of the evaluation was the presence of a significant amount of made ground dating from the post-medieval period. These deposits were of considerable depth reaching a maximum excavated depth of 4.0m below the ground surface. These deposits appear to be consolidating the ground surface to provide a solid foundation for the construction of Wouldhave House in the early 1960's.
