Abstract: |
Between the 19th and 20th of January 2015, an archaeological evaluation was carried out at land to the rear of Nos 18-22 London Road, Godmanchester, prior to the proposed construction of a single house. The development area had high archaeological potential, particularly for Roman archaeology, as it is located next to a Roman Road (Ermine Street), a Roman cemetery and on the edge of the Roman town of Durovigutum (modern Godmanchester), immediately to the south of the town walls. Within the single evaluation trench there were ten inter-cutting features, three of which were identified as modern pits. The remaining seven were all linear features, several of which contained Roman pottery, although the sherds were all small and abraded, while others produced post-medieval sherds. These features are most likely to be the remains of 19th century strip quarries, similar to those found on an adjacent excavation, that had presumably disturbed earlier deposits and subsequently been backfilled with residual material. |
