Abstract:
The report describes the results of a project to repair and restore Trelill holy well, near Helston, Cornwall. The well is located in the bottom of a shallow valley, beside a stream, and until three years ago, was in serious, declining condition, due to the combined problems of flooding, scrub growth and deteriorating masonry. However in 2011, with the co-operation and help of the new owner of the site, work began on a plan to restore the monument. The work to restore the well was co-ordinated by Cornwall Council's Historic Environment Projects team's Monument Management Scheme. It was funded by owner Mark Rowe, the Monument Management Scheme, and Wendron Parish Council, and carried out with the help of an enthusiastic team of volunteers. The first step was to clear the engulfing scrub; the next was to remove a stone hedge from across the stream, whose blocked culvert was causing flooding and a build up of silt. With these basic items achieved, the next step was to consolidate and repair the structure itself, before finally installing a fence to protect the monument. The well will be maintained in the future by the volunteers and by Wendron Parish Council.
