Abstract: |
The results of the evaluation can be summarily described as having two components, namely an area to the east with virtually no finds nor deposits of archaeological interest, and areas to west where these are widely present. Archaeological deposits were encountered across the three fields on the western side of the site and revealed a typical range of pits and postholes, ditches and gullies along with two masonry structures that may be corn driers or even buildings. There appeared to be a change of emphasis in the southern part of this zone where the deposits encountered were mostly linear in nature perhaps indicting that this zone was an area of fields/paddocks relating to a settled area to the north. The majority of the features were of middle Roman date. A small number of Early Saxon features indicate thepresence of a small Saxon settlement on the site. A very little prehistoric pottery and struck was also recovered. |
