Abstract: |
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 32 hectares, was carried out on agricultural land at Honington, Lincolnshire in advance of the determination of a planning application for a proposed solar farm development. Anomalies caused by soil-filled archaeological ditches forming two enclosures of likely Iron Age/early Roman date have been identified on the western edge of the site, one of which is previously unknown. In addition a possible former field system of likely similar date has also been identified in the central and southern parts of the site. The survey confirms the conclusion of an Environmental Statement that the proposed development site lies within a landscape of high archaeological potential which includes Honington Camp, a presumed Iron Age hillfort, which lies 300m to the south of the site. |
