Abstract: |
An archaeological impact assessment was carried out on the former Bull Motors and Celestion site on the south side of Foxhall Road, following a previous archaeological desktop assessment. Brickearth quarrying in the early 20th century had discovered Lower Palaeolithic remains of high regional importance, dating to c. 400,000 Before Present, on an old land surface selaed beneath the brickearth at a depth of c. 5m. The remains included 134 Acheulian handaxes, now in Ipswich Museum, and mammal bones. Fieldwork carried out by Layard (1903-5), Smith (1914) and Moir (1921) has been summarised by Wymer (1985) and recently re-appraised in detail by White and Plunkett (2004). The remains relate to the banks of a palaeochannel feeding a glacial lake, which was formed by meltwater at the end of the Anglian glaciation and at early in the Hoxnian interglacial. An Early Bronze Age beaker sherd was found at the top of the geological sequence. No later archaeological remains have been found on site, which was open fields until the Victorian period. |
