Abstract:
A small area of graveyards was cleared of burials in preparation for the construction of a north porch extension. The footprint of the new building was excavated to a depth of half a metre below the nave floor, removing over a metre of overburden in places. The overburden comprised a typical cemetery soil, rich in disarticulated bone as a result of re-working over the course of centuries. The late 500mm of the excavated area revealed 13 full or partial bodies. Only two of the bodies could be dated with any certainty, having come from graves with 19th century coffin furniture still in place. Two large pits were also revealed on the western edge of the site. These contained disarticulated bone and post medieval pottery.
