Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works was undertaken in St John's, Worcester (NGR SO 8415 5435), on behalf of Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd. Sainsbury's intended to develop land next to Swanpool Walk, as well undertake works at Christopher Whitehead School. The excavations at the Sainsbury's site in St John's have added greatly to our understanding of Late Iron Age and early Roman settlement in Worcester. The area of the Bromwich Lane Tennis Club has produced occupation activity from probably the Middle Iron Age period to the post-Roman period. This includes a rectangular enclosure was constructed in the late Iron Age, reused in the Roman period. The enclosure was partially reused in the 2nd century, probably as part of a farmstead and used as a burial ground in the later Roman/early post-Roman period. Indeed, it is probable that the irregular alignment of an early medieval routeway is due to it being deflected around the enclosure and burial ground. During the medieval and post-medieval periods the usual activities associated with backlands of street frontages and field boundaries and evidence of Tanning Industry were found.
