Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd ahead of a water pipeline, on land to the west of Kendal, between Underbarrow Road and Brigsteer Road, and to the east of the A591, Cumbria. The work was requested by the landowner (Mr Holmes) as he was aware that a building had previously existed on, or near, the proposed line of the water pipe. A check of the available sources identified a building on a Tithe map of 1826, and a 'well' but no building marked on the 1st edition OS map. The Cumbria Country Councils Historic Environment Record held a record for the building (HER No. 44022). It was agreed that a watching brief should be undertaken where the pipeline ran in the immediate vicinity of the former location of the building. The watching brief confirmed the remains of a wall and a possible foundation deposit which may have been the partial remains of the building. |
