Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by William Smith Limited to undertake building recording of the former NAAFI store and shop at Stainton Grove Army Camp, near Barnard Castle, County Durham, centred on OS NGR NZ 07101 17894. The camp was established during World War II as a training camp for Royal Armoured Corps tank crews. The NAAFI store and shop were recorded at English Heritage Level 2 in advance of their demolition as a condition of planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) was created by the British government in 1921 as a not for profit organisation to run catering and recreational establishments for the British Armed Forces, and to sell goods to servicemen and their families. Stainton Grove Army Camp opened in 1941 and the NAAFI store and shop was a major local point serving provisions to army families locally and from the adjoining army camps. The historic building recording of the former Stainton Grove NAAFI store and shop has shown that the two buildings retain many original features although they have been adapted over the years to meet the changing uses of the buildings.
