Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East (ASE), the contracting division of The Centre for Applied Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, were commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd on behalf of their client to undertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of the construction of new residential units at the location of the former Silwood Estate, (centred NGR TQ 3523 7858). The eastern and southern parts of the site had potential (where alluvial deposits overlay gravels) to provide evidence of the local prehistoric environment, as well as evidence of prehistoric human activity in the area. No archaeological features were encountered during the evaluation and only a single flint core of Middle Neolithic or earlier date was recovered. The evaluation did however encounter interesting geo-archaeological sequence as well as the presence of a probable gravel bar with a channel and/or low lying flood plain environment. |
