Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Kings College London to undertake building recording of nos 129 and 131 Borough High Street, London Borough of Southwark, located at OS NGR TQ 32575 80015. The buildings lay within a Conservation Area although they were not listed. The recording was carried out before and during demolition as part of a condition of planning permission for redevelopment of the site with a new hotel and gym. The buildings had been used as shops with residential accommodation above. Recording showed that the earliest parts, a brick wall and a timber-framed stud wall, were late 18th century. The brick wall in no. 131 had a wide chimney stack with two first floor fireplaces side by side that originally heated two separate properties. The buildings were given a new unifying facade in the 1850s or 60s as part of Frederick Lowther's hosier and outfitter's shop, who operated from nos 131-135 from at least 1865 to 1882. At the same time, the north elevation of no. 129 was rebuilt with a chimney stack to provide second and third floor fireplaces. A 19th century kitchen range still survived at second floor level at the time of recording. By 1872, Lowther had extended no. 131 to the east. During the early 20th century, the shop floor was opened up into the east extension, the rear and side walls of no. 131 were replaced with walls constructed of Fletton bricks and nos 129 and 131 was reroofed.
