Abstract: |
Phase I of the project saw the excavation of three trenches. Alluvial clays and silts which had been exposed in the late 18th or 19th century period were found to the maximum depth which could be excavated, approximately 3.9m. These were capped by a humic deposit of preserved top soil, moist likely early 19th century in date, which was in turn sealed by 19th century made ground, associated with the use of the site as a railway coal depot. These deposits were overlain by modern strata. |
