Abstract: |
A programme of Surface Artefact Collection (field-walking) was undertaken on two ploughed fields to the west of Southwater, West Sussex. Conditions were almost ideal for the collection of material, and a range of artefacts were recovered from a total area of c.10ha. The presence of a limited assemblage of flintwork and fire-cracked flint suggests Mesolithic and Neolithic activity in the vicinity. A small quantity of Romano-British pottery and medieval tile suggest the continued use of the field for deposition of domestic refuse. However, there was a dramatic increase in this activity in the post-medieval period, resulting in the recovery of a significant quantity of late post-medieval pottery and other artefacts |
