Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by CgMs on behalf of their client to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land at Foxmead, Meadowside: Storrington, to assess the potential for the survival of archaeological remains outside the footprint of the existing building, which may be impacted upon during the redevelopment of the site. Three evaluation trenches were opened in the northeast of the site which all exhibited the same basic sequence of stratigraphy. Natural Folkstone sand deposits are overlain by layers of post medieval buried topsoil and subsoil containing finds dating mainly to between the 17th and 19th centuries, with some residual 13th - 16th century CBM. These deposits were sealed by layers of made ground and modern topsoil associated with the construction of the Foxmead care home in the 1970's. Two deep geoarchaeological trenches were excavated in the south and southwestern extremes of the site to characterise the nature and dates of deposits associated with the River Stor. Trench 4 contained a layer of peat at a maximum depth of 35.55m AOD, which was dated by finds stratified immediately above it to between the 17th and 19th centuries. Trench 5 contained a sequence of alluvial or post medieval made ground deposits containing fragments of coal, presumably dating to the same time period, although no finds were recovered from these deposits. Both geoarchaological pits indicate the sites use as marshland/wetland associated with the River Stor with minimal human activity until the 17th - 19th centuries. No archaeological features of an earlier date were observed cutting the natural geology.
