Abstract:
In order to meet the requirements of the planning consent for the development of land adjacent to 102 High Street, Henlow, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological investigation. Stage 1 of the investigation took the form of a field evaluation, which identified a number of features which were dated to the late Saxon/early medieval period. Stage 2 took the form of an assessment of the results by the Archaeology Team (AT) of Central Bedfordshire Council, and led to the more detailed investigation of the footprint of the proposed dwelling, this being the location of both the highest concentration of archaeological features and the greatest impact. The area of excavation was stripped of topsoil and overburden by mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. The excavation revealed a number of features [003], [005], [007], [013] and [015] including a possible curved linear [001]. Subsequent excavation of these features revealed that they were probably natural in origin. Two features were revealed that were of man-made origin. Pit [009] was dated by a single find of tile to the post-medieval period and pit [011] was undated. The re-excavation of pit [201], initially revealed during the evaluation, allowed an environmental sample to be taken to clarify the function of the pit and to indicate the character of the surrounding area in the late Saxon/early Medieval period.
