Abstract: |
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken at Peacock Lane/Carey's Close, Leicester by University of Leicester Archaeological Services in response to development proposals for student accommodation in May 2010. Eight test-pits were excavated within a basement in an area defined as having archaeological potential as it was located within the known Roman and medieval town. The test-pits revealed potential Roman yard surfaces, a masonry building foundation and pits. A few medieval pits, observed cutting the Roman deposits, are thought to be associated with potential back yard properties that fronted on to either Peacock Lane or Applegate (the medieval High Street). The site archive will be held with Leicester Museum Service, under the accession code: A7.2010. |
