Abstract: |
Standing building recording was undertaken prior to partial demolition and conversion. The main mill dates from 1788 and was the first water-powered mill to spin flax in Scotland. Significant repairs and additions were undertaken in 1837. In the first half of the 20th century the buildings were adapted to produce shoddy. Further conversion in recent years for use as a chemical factory had obscured or removed earlier features. The original 18th-century mill is built of red sandstone rubble with a slate roof and has two stories and a loft. Blockings in the wall beside the lade show that the position of the wheel, which does not survive, may have been altered. Few internal features survive but a concrete water tank may have been associated with the shoddy production. |
