Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out by Terrain Archaeology in December 2005 during the erection of new fencing in Barn Field, Longfield and Saltmarsh, Hengistbury Head (NGR SZ17309081). In Longfield and Saltmarsh only the holes for the gateposts were observed, as the remainder of the fence posts were driven into position. In Barn Field, a 320m length of fencing was put in across its eastern end and a total of 182 post-pits were observed. No features were encountered, but Iron Age and Roman pottery and worked flint were recovered. This material was concentrated towards the northern part of the fence line. |
