Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological investigation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in November 2013 to February 2014 at the request of the Highways Agency at the Catthorpe Interchange, M1, Junction 19, Leicestershire. In compliance with an approved WSI (CA 2013a), a programme of archaeological mitigation was undertaken, comprising an evaluation, excavation, a watching brief and earthwork survey. The main phase of archaeological mitigation comprised an archaeological excavation across development Area 3, of which this assessment is primarily concerned. The archaeological excavation revealed the presence of a number of 2nd to 3rd century AD Roman quarry pits, succeeded later in the 3rd century AD by the establishment of two probable stock enclosures, associated droveways and a field system. Following a period of abandonment the site was used in the medieval period for ridge-and-furrow cultivation. |
