Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the development of the area. A late 11th century pit was found under the south part of Vine Cottages and probably indicated the eastern limit of the medieval settlement of King's End. This area was subsequently cultivated in the 12th to early/mid 13th century, and continued in use until no later than the mid 14th century. The east-west range of Vine Cottages respected this boundary. Slightly further north the limit of properties fronting the Causeway on the west of the site was discovered, marked by a change in cultivation and a wall. 17th century ground make up and the foundations from the recently demolished cottage were also encountered.
