Abstract:
In January 2018 an Archaeological Topographical Survey was undertaken of an enclosed field to the southwest of the village of Sloothby, in the East Lindsey District of Lincolnshire. The purpose of the survey was to obtain an accurate measured record of historic earthworks attributable to the medieval agrarian landscape, prior to their destruction by commercial development. The enclosed field contained two complete and adjoining, yet relict, medieval furlong fields, surviving as earthworks in exceptionally good state of preservation. The earthworks were surveyed to Ordnance Survey National Grid co-ordinates and orthometric heights using RTK Differential GPS and an archaeological hachure plan was created. The report provides an illustrative and descriptive account of the earthworks, using a combination of computer-generated graphics and conventional survey drawings, supported by digital photography. The report also considers the historical context of the two furlong fields with respect to surviving elements of Sloothby's medieval and post-medieval agrarian landscape.
