Abstract:
In August and September 2016, and September 2017, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out two phases of trial trench evaluation on 30.78 hectares of land at Chilton Leys, Suffolk. The earliest feature identified was an isolated Bronze Age pit, containing Bronze Age pottery, burnt flint and fired clay. Sparse struck flint was found within a few later features with prehistoric pottery recovered from two further pits. Medieval pottery associated with a range of other finds, including animal bone, CBM and fired clay, was recovered from a number of features across the site including pits, ditches and postholes. A probable medieval moated enclosure, with an associated trackway and secondary enclosure were located during the trial trenching. Post medieval features including field boundaries and quarry pits were also recorded. Many features recorded correlated with anomalies identified during the previous geophysical survey of the site. Roman and Saxon pottery and Roman CBM were also recorded as residual finds in a small number of features.
