Abstract:
An archaeological strip, map and record was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the construction of a solar farm at Winham Farm, Cullompton, Devon. The strip, map and record identified a substantial amount of archaeological features corresponding with anomalies detected by a previous geophysical survey and confirmed the results of the preceding evaluation. The majority of the ditches identified during the current works were observed again, or were of very similar type. Evidence for early prehistoric activity was identified by a small amount of early Neolithic pottery from two ditches in the eastern part of the site and from one of the two ring ditches investigated during the evaluation. A Roman co-axial field system previously identified from the evaluation and another possible drying oven were identified in the western part of the area, along with a number of possible post-medieval quarry pits in the south eastern corner of the site and undated pits and posthole/pits.
