Abstract:
An evaluation trench at the rear of No. 15, Greenhill found deep cultivation soils and post-medieval features. A stone hearth of medieval date was found nearby during the later watching brief Archaeological excavation to the rear of Nos. 17 and 19, Greenhill found that post-med development of the site had removed much of the existing horizontal stratigraphy, probably also any shallow cut features in the process. Two medieval wells were partly excavated along with 2 cesspits and 3 medieval pits. The excavation has indicated that the site was first developed in the C13th , although small quantities of C12th pottery were recovered, possibly indicating sporadic activity at that date. Most of the cut features seem to have been filled in during the later C13th or early C14th and evidence for occupation of the site between then and the C17th was sparse in the trench. Some of the post-med features investigated indicate that the boundary between Nos.17 and 19 may have shifted during the C18th before being re -established on the medieval line. Despite the relative paucity of medieval remains, the stratigraphic, artefactual and environmental evidence will contribute to a greater understanding of the development of this eastern suburb of Lichfield and has implications for published theories concerning earlier road systems. Assessment of the standing buildings on 17-21, Greenhill identified a 2 bay 2 storey solar block of mid-C15th date which formed a cross wing to a now lost hall range on the site of no. 19. The presence of this building calls into question the excavation evidence for sparse occupation at this time. The remaining structural evidence indicates continuing alterations throughout the post-med period, modernising and extending the earlier structures, so that the external appearance is now predominantly of Georgian and Victorian date.
