Abstract:
The results of a desk-based assessment, walkover survey, geophysical survey and historic impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. for land north of Lankelly Lane, Fowey, Cornwall. The site is located on higher ground towards the western side of the parish; the layout of the fields and roads in the area has changed very little since 1838, although the urban extent of Fowey has expanded in the later 20th century. Both Lankelly and Lawhyre are early medieval in origin and sit within a fieldscape of small semi-regular fields that were probably enclosed from larger communal open fields in the late medieval or early post-medieval period. The HLC characterises this area as medieval farmland with a high probability of encountering archaeological features of Prehistoric or Romano-British date. The county HER lists relatively few archaeological assets in the local area but the geophysical survey undertaken identified a series of features, some of which appear to correspond with earthworks. It also identified a possible roundhouse of likely Prehistoric or Romano-British date. On that basis the archaeological potential of the site is likely to be high. There is one Grade II* Listed (and Scheduled) structure, five Grade II Listed structures, part of the Fowey Conservation Area, and part of the Grade II Menabilly RPG within 1km of the site. Almost all of the designated heritage assets in this area are located at such a distance to minimise the impact of the proposed development, or else the contribution of setting to overall significance is less important than other factors. The landscape context of these buildings is such that they would be partly or wholly insulated from the effects of the proposed development by a combination of local blocking and the topography.
