Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between July and August 2016 at land at St Mary's Primary School, Marlborough, Wiltshire. Two areas were excavated on the eastern part of the development site, which targeted features revealed during a previous evaluation of the site. The archaeological investigation identified three phases of activity between the Late Neolithic to post-medieval periods. Five pits of later Neolithic date were uncovered along the southern edge of the site, from which a large assemblage of pottery and worked flint, including two deliberately broken axeheads, was recovered. These features are probably contemporary with the Marlborough Mound, located 500m to the west, and may represent unusual deposits associated with its construction and/or use. A single possible quarry pit of Anglo-Saxon date was uncovered in the centre of the site, contributing to the scant evidence for this period in the Marlborough area. Several areas of post-medieval and modern truncation, resulting from the use of the site as arable field and allotment gardens, were also revealed.
