Abstract:
The earliest activity at the site comprised undated but probable Iron Age or earlier features. Part of a substantial ditched enclosure along the western margin of the site represents the eastern boundary of a settlement of probable Iron Age date located beyond the edges of the development site. A sinuous segmented ditch extending across the eastern edge of the site may be of earlier prehistoric date. Medieval activity was also noted at the site. Truncating the prehistoric ditched enclosure was a substantial ditched enclosure situated along the western margin of the site; pottery of 12th- to early 14th-century date was recovered from its fills. Discrete features including twelve postholes and sixteen pits were recorded across the investigated area from which a small assemblage of finds were recovered including medieval pottery, bone, fired clay, slag and a corroded iron object. Three shallow ditches recorded across the central part of the site probably represent surviving elements of a system of medieval field boundaries. Significant industrial and processing activity is represented by a group of four very well-preserved corn-drying kilns and six hearths. Although medieval pottery was recovered from the corn-drying kilns no datable artefactual material was recovered from the hearths and these could potentially be prehistoric in date. The paleoenvironmental remains recovered from the corn-drying kilns are of regional significance.
