Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation comprising six trenches (Trenches 1-6) undertaken in advance of proposed resurfacing, kerb works and traffic signal works on Westgate Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. At this location, Westgate Road follows the postulated line of Hadrian's Wall, within the corridor of the UNESCO transnational World Heritage Site, 'Frontiers of the Roman Empire', thus the site had potential for archaeological evidence of the Roman period. Trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of c. 0.55m, this the maximum depth of any proposed ground work. Features and deposits encountered during the archaeological evaluation represent 20th century to modern activity at the site. |
