Abstract:
The results of a desk-based assessment and heritage impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for land at Pentire Holiday Park, Kilkhampton, Cornwall, in advance of a planning application for the site. The Site is located in Anciently Enclosed Land to the south-west of Kilkhampton, a Domesday manor with probable Saxon origins. The archaeological potential of this landscape is demonstrable, with a number of field system cropmarks, prehistoric earthworks including a 'round' and barrows and a Norman motte and bailey castle within 1km of the proposed site. On the basis of this assessment coupled with the lack of any subsurface- or intrusive surveys, the archaeological potential of the site must be considered as medium to high. The majority of designated heritage assets in the local vacinity would suffer no impact from the proposed development. The most notable heritage assets in close proximity to the site are the Grade I Church of St James, the Conservation Area of Kilkhampton and the various Grade II and undesignated assets within; and the Scheduled Kilkhampton Castle. Overall, the propsed development will have a negligible impact on the buildings and landscape context of Kilkhampton's Conservation Area and buildings. Kilkhampton Castle, a Norman motte and bailey in good condition is relatively innocuous when viewed within wider landscape views; however, part of its value and significance is associated with the views it (once) afforded over the wider landscape. The proposed development would be within these views and it therefore would have a negative/minor and largely cumulative impact on the castles setting.
