Abstract: |
The results of an archaeological evaluation carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at Penzance Heliport Replacement, Jelbert Way, Penzance, Cornwall, on behalf of WYG Consulting in advance of a planning application for a proposed Heliport. The evaluation targeted the geophysical anomalies identified in a survey undertaken by AOC in 2017. The archaeological evaluation largely validated the results of the geophysical survey (AOC 2017), identifying and investigating archaeological features across the western half of the site, and confirming ground disturbance and a network of land drains across the eastern half of the site. Historic field boundaries, ploughmarks and field drains were identified in Trenches 2 to 8. Up to 1m of modern made ground overlying a humose sediment up to 0.40m thick with multiple phases of land drains were identified in Trenches 8 to 15. Most significantly, the evaluation revealed a badly-damaged probable Bronze Age barrow. |
