Abstract:
Archaeological inspection and recording was carried out at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Ayston Rutland, (SK 86032 00983) by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) in three phases between October 2014 and May 2015. The work was carried out on behalf of Belfry Ltd during restoration and drainage works on the church. As well as the miscellaneous human bone fragments, the remains of 25 articulated skeletons were identified and recorded. Many of these were close to the existing church walls and a number of them had been truncated by the foundations. The original 12th century building was extended and modified in the following centuries and it seems likely that these burials are associated with the earlier, smaller church building. Finds of a few sherds of medieval pottery and a medieval buckle suggest a 12th - 14th century date range for the burials. A number of grave stones were also recorded prior to their removal for health and safety reasons during the groundworks.
