Abstract: |
A multi-proxy palaeoenvironmental investigation of late Devensian and early Holocene deposits within a kettle hole - a c 150m diameter wetland - at Lilburn South Steads [NU 0280 2340], near Wooler, NE Northumberland was carried out by Jones et al (2000). Pollen, molluscs and ostracods were used to reconstruct past vegetation of the environs, the kettle hole's hydroseral succession and changes in lake levels. From these, past climatic conditions were inferred. Problems of 'old carbon' contamination possibly affecting radiocarbon dating results were highlighted here, as radiocarbon ages were older than their respective pollen signal indicated. |
