Abstract:
John Moore Heritage Services carried out an archaeological watching brief at Park Farm, Ambroseden in Oxfordshire (NGR SP 6035 1926). The archaeological remains noted in this watching brief include; the remains of walls and robbed out walls of buildings and a linear boundary besides a number of pits. Phase 1 saw the formation of a number of layers above the natural, into which were cut the line of a boundary feature and a number of pits. The foundations of Park Farm were also observed as going far deeper and that there was an earlier doorway in the structure that pre-dated the 18th century doorway and extended halfway below the current ground level. Phase 2 saw a building to the southeast, which may well be the end of a north to south oriented building partially shown on the Tithe Map of 1848. This structure was demolished and robbed at a time between 1848-1875, which is classed as Phase 4. Phase 3 saw the construction of the stone part of the current south range of Park Farm. This was probably late 17th -18th centuries. Phase 5 saw additions to the various units of Park Farm, including the addition of the Orangery, and also the brick and timber frame structure that formed part of the back range. The brickwork was replaced in a modern renovation. The front part of the old farmhouse was extended to the northeast. Phase 6 saw modern alterations.
