Abstract: |
Two phases of exploratory groundworks identified multiple sources of seepage extending over a minimum of 30m along Cadbury Castle's lower third rampart and three modern water tanks and a trough with associated pipes. The tanks had been sealed with a large body of clay which is now impeding drainage and contributes to waterlogging in the area. The front of the 18th-century sculpted well hood was fully exposed and found to be skewed in relation to its base. There is strong evidence to suggest that it has been moved by at least 4m from its original position at a time no earlier than the second half of the 20th century and that part of the subsurface remains of a Post-medieval wall were destroyed in the process. Tumbled stones from the wall imply that it was a substantial structure. Finds were all modern. |
