Abstract:
Two excavations took place in the garden of no. 12 in 2005. The first, in April, was 1m x 1m square and lay towards the rear of the garden. An area 3m x 2m had been excavated previously by the family, exposing some large stones. The stones may have been a collapsed wall. When removed a layer of clay was recorded, perhaps a clay floor. A possible post hole was visible in the north-east corner of the pit. 9 sherds of Late Iron Age/Early Roman pottery were recovered and 81 sherds of Roman pottery. The second piece of fieldwork was in July and took place as part of Channel 4/Time Team's 'Big Roman Dig'. No features were recorded but further pottery was picked up - 4 Late Iron Age/Early Roman sherds and 11 Roman sherds. The most common pottery type was greyware, but there was also some Samian (including a mid-late C2nd foot ring from a cup), Nene Valley colour coated ware and mortaria. There were also a few pieces of Roman tile, including tegula, imbrex and flue tile.
