Axes found at Ulgham and Trow Rock are discussed. The faceted axe is of Meldreth type, for which three variant body shapes are defined. The other two are Yorkshire 3-ribbed axes, here mapped fully and discussed as hoard occurrences and in relation to N English plain (Everthorpe) axes. Both types, faceted and 3-ribbed, belong to final BA?Montelius V/Ha B3, 8th century BC, possibly surviving into 6th. Most examples are too small and light for conventional axes.

[NY 790688] Excavations 1969-73 recovered most of the plan of a normal military hospital built round a courtyard. The ?operating theatre wing was later used for industrial purposes, perhaps repairs. There were several small wards, a latrine and ?plunge bath, but no heated rooms. There was very little dating evidence. A reconstruction drawing is offered and samian, plain wares, several small finds and coins are catalogued.

[NY 935640]. Another contribution to the debate about this building focuses on two issues: the problem of floor levels and the eastern entrances to the crypt. Line 'g' of Hodges' plan (contra Gilbert - see 75/3101) was originally an arcade and the great depth of its eastern foundation is due to the proximity of the crypt. Hodges' section and existing remains suggest that the Wilfridian nave-level was c 91-5cm below the present floor. There was a raised sanctuary over the crypt and probably also a raised western sanctuary as at Canterbury. Foundation 'h' is related to the eastern sanctuary and may have been an ambolsolea. Arguments are offered against Gilbert's case for changes in the south-eastern passage and his views on the relationship of the passages and the above-ground structure. [NU 0540]. Discussion of the form of the necklace found in 1927; in general shape it follows the Poltalloch reconstruction, but the wear patterns suggest stringing in multiple rows like those of the Masterton necklace, but with eight rows instead of five. Alternatively the beads could have been sewn on to a tunic as a decorative yoke.
