Abstract:
In April 2016 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at 8A The Highlands, Exning, Suffolk CB8 7NT (NGR TL 626 658). The evaluation was required to comply with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the proposed construction of a new garage and access (Forest Heath District Council Planning Approval Ref. DC/15/0130/FUL), and based on advice from Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Conservation Team (SCC AS-CT) The house plot was subject to a previous archaeological evaluation (SCC AS 2009; EXG 090) which revealed no archaeological features, but some residual finds. The groundworks for a new house plot to the west of 8 The Highlands were subject to a programme of archaeological monitoring by AS in 2014. This revealed no archaeological remains (EXG 103). The evaluation recorded two small undated pits, F1003 and F1005. The trench also contained a modern pit and a modern soakaway, and tree root disturbance. Pit F1003 contained a crumb of pottery which was too abraded to be dated and could potentially have been manufactured in the late Iron Age, Roman or early medieval (9th-12th century) periods.
