Abstract: |
An archaeological trial-trenching evaluation was carried out Cannock Mill, Old Heath Road, Colchester in advance of the construction of a new residential development with associated infrastructure. The current Cannock Mill dates to the mid 19th century and is a Grade II Listed Building (NHLE no. 1337742). However, documentary sources record a mill on the site from as early as the 14th century. Despite being located in an area of archaeological significance only modern features were identified in trenches T1-T7, which were located in a field south-west of Cannock Mill. Trench T8 next to Cannock Mill revealed the remains of a timber revetment driven into natural alluvium that may have supported the wall of the waterwheel pit. |
