Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching was carried out by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) on former overgrown garden land at Cedar Lawn directly south- west of Church Street, Burbage, Leicestershire (SP 44252 92690). The work was in advance of the construction of three new dwellings. Four trenches were proposed across the dwellings footprints; two orientated at right angles south-east from Grove Road, with two trenches at right angles south-west from Church Street. The aim was the location of surviving archaeological remains in the form of probable plot boundaries parallel to the former Medieval street frontages in line to the present streets, together with possible Medieval Burbage plots. The site lies within the former medieval settlement core of Burbage, (MLE2848) within close proximity to the church of St Catherine. Two large features of undetermined extent were located in the form of a large diameter pit, and another un-defined feature. A distinct lack of Medieval pottery and bone was absent from the pit with just a single sherd each of Medieval and Post-medieval pot from each feature. Initial interpretation is possible garden features possibly associated with the house. The land appears heavily landscaped.
