Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE) has undertaken a number of archaeological investigations at Maidstone Hospital in recent years. Much of the work has consisted of small-scale evaluations in advance of development work at the site; two sites have produced significant archaeological remains. An evaluation and subsequent open area excavation at the site of a new nursery uncovered evidence of Late Iron Age activity in the form of a group of pits. Limited Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age material was also uncovered. An evaluation, open area excavation and watching brief at the New Renal Unit resulted in the discovery and recording of an accompanied Roman cremation burial, with no apparent associated features.
