Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East undertook an archaeological evaluation followed by a watching brief on behalf of Scott Wilson Ltd in association with the Southern Water Hardham Tidal Abstraction Scheme. Investigations revealed a pit of early to mid 16th century date containing domestic pottery and a wall of a probable barn of post-medieval date were identified. A moderate quantity of pottery was recovered during the watching brief and concentrated around the part of the site closest to the village of Hardham, a fragmentary Bronze Age vessel was found suggesting a possible cremation cemetery, though no features of Bronze Age date were found. An assemblage of medieval pottery from 12th century onwards was also recovered. |
