Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation comprised of 6 trenches running north to south across the western portion of the site. Natural gravel was seen in Trenches 1, 2 and 3 at levels ranging from 24.84m OD in the north of Trench 1 to 22.18m OD in the southernmost part of Trench 3. Natural head deposits, made up of a matrix of sand, clay and gravel, were seen in Trenches 4, 5 and 6 ranging from 21.42m OD in the north of Trench 4 to 18.65m OD in the southern portion of Trench 6. A layer of possibly colluvial clay was present from the top of the slope in Trench 3 down to the southernmost part of Trench 6 at the lowest point of the site. No evidence of activity predating the later post-medieval period was recorded on the site.
