Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief revealed a number of archaeological features surviving below a substantial depth of overburden. The earliest possibly dated to the early to mid-Saxon period and comprised a large quarry pit later filled in with deposits containing animal bone and pottery probably deriving from nearby settlement activity. Adjacent to this was an undated, but possibly related pit/posthole/gully terminus, which may have been deliberately backfilled. A parallel northwest-southeast aligned ditch and gully dating to the 12th to 14th centuries was found to the south, running perpendicular to and sloping down towards Oak Street. To the south of this were two rows of evenly spaced postholes of similar depths, possibly forming a single structure or two rows of postholes. One of the postholes contained a sherd of 13th to 15th century pottery. |
