Abstract:
Heritage Planning Services Ltd has been commissioned by Wishford Schools (the client) to prepare a Statement of Significance for derelict glasshouses in the walled garden adjacent to Hatherop Castle School, GL7 3NB (hereafter referred to as the Study Area). Planning permission is being sought for the demolition of the present glasshouses in order that the Kitchen Garden may be brought into use for sporting activities and recreation. This heritage assessment has confirmed that the present glasshouses within the walled garden associated with Hatherop Castle, are probably not the same structures shown on the OS maps of 1888-1921; the present structures appear to be significantly narrower. The surviving ventilation mechanism indicates they were constructed by Thomas Messenger and Company of Loughborough, a well-known manufacturer of glasshouses in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Although the firm ceased trading in 1980, it is known that they ended specialisation in glasshouses from the 1930s onwards. It seems likely, therefore, that the present structures were installed at some time in the 1920s. As far as could be ascertained, the present glasshouses do not have any particular architectural or historical merit. It is therefore considered that the removal of the greenhouses would be beneficial in enabling the conservation and repair of the south wall of the Stable Yard Buildings, which are noted for their significance under the Grade 2 listing for Hatherop Castle estate. The stabilisation of the outbuildings and the restoration of the region to provide sporting and recreation facilities would be seen to be a practical use of this area of the site, which is currently overgrown and in a poor state of repair. Furthermore, the dilapidated nature of the buildings can be seen to pose a significant health and safety risk to children and staff wanting to make use of the Kitchen Garden.
